“Utility costs are a significant line item in our budget and that line item continues to grow as rates increase”, said Milton Nagel, assistant superintendent for Administrative Services. “Solar will help reduce our electric bills, allowing for those funds to be redirected to the classroom to the betterment of student achievement.”

The newest system is expected to save $11,695 in just the first year and over $330,000 over the system’s expected lifespan.

Installed by Salisbury-based Paradise Energy Solutions, the newest 412-panel system will produce 114,663 kWh of clean sustainable electricity in just the first year.

“Renewable clean energy solutions like solar are a component of environmental education,” Nagel said. “Teaching how to be good stewards of our planet is an important component and something everyone can get excited about.”

The school district is currently installing another 876 solar panels on its Support Services Office on Greensboro Road in Denton, which is expected to be completed and operational in the coming weeks.

Everybody Solar completes first half of solar portfolio for Kentucky center for at-risk children ֠Solar Power World

Buckhorn Children & Family Services, a nonprofit organization in Eastern Kentucky that provides a sanctuary of health, healing and hope for at-risk children, youth and families throughout Kentucky, unveiled their new 10-kW solar installation provided by the nonprofit Everybody Solar, in partnership with MaxSolar, Mountain Association and HOMES, Inc. This installation is the first phase of the two-phased project. The nonprofit needs to raise an additional $32,262 to complete the project.

The new solar panels donated by MaxSolar, a provider of O&M, technical and asset management services for commercial solar PV systems, will save Buckhorn about $2,500 annually in electricity. The goal is to install additional panels, doubling the amount of solar generated and equaling 20.4 kW per year or over $145,000 in savings over 25 years. By installing the panels, Buckhorn hopes to use the savings to purchase needed bedding, blankets, basic hygiene kits and more for the children in their care.

“During these uncertain times with COVID-19 and the economy, we continue to explore ways to save money and increase services,” said Billy Smith, executive director at Buckhorn Children and Family Services. “Uncertainty increases the need for our services. The savings from solar energy will allow us to reach more children and families in need of healing.”

Buckhorn Children & Family Services serves children who have experienced severe abuse and neglect throughout Kentucky.

Not only will this solar installation increase the impact Buckhorn has on children and families in all 120 counties in Kentucky, but it also provides new job skills to former coal miners whose numbers have grown as coal production in Eastern Kentucky has dropped over the past decade. Through partner HOMES Inc, an organization that provides affordable and efficient housing solutions to distressed communities in Eastern Kentucky, former coal miners aided in the installation, providing them with new job skills in the energy sector, which has the highest job growth in the country.

And it would place solar customers into a complicated time-of-use rate structure and greatly under-value excess solar generation fed back to the utility, which would negatively impact Buckhorn’s ability to help children and families in need in Kentucky.”

ForeFront Power completes 2.8-MW solar project for Illinois nonprofit residential childcare facility

ForeFront Power announced commercial operation of the largest solar project in Kane County, Illinois. With 7,384 panels, the 2.8-megawatt project delivers power to the Mooseheart Child City and School, a nonprofit residential childcare facility for children and teens in need. The project created more than 44 jobs during the construction and operation phases.

The Mooseheart solar project received incentives through the state’s Adjustable Block Program (ABP), which was established by the Future Energy Jobs Act to support the development of new PV distributed generation and community solar projects in Illinois. While the program has been successful in helping generate new clean electricity in the state, the funding for the program has been exhausted and must be renewed for the state to see uninterrupted growth in the sector.

Keith Wheeler of Illinois’ 50th district. “The Mooseheart solar project is a testament to the job creation engine that solar energy has become in our state over the past few years as a result of the Future Energy Jobs Act. West Virginia state lawmakers should legalize a renewable energy financing tool known as Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs). This will increase the demand for renewable energies, especially solar energy. At the federal level, we should invest to ensure that this demand is met by West Virginia workers and that it benefits our state’s local businesses and farms.

With PPAs, companies and organizations can install solar or other power generation systems on their property at no upfront cost. With a PPA, a third party owns, installs, and maintains the facility. Customers benefit from the fact that they can buy the electricity that the system generates at a lower price than they pay to their supplier.

PPAs are legal in 28 states including our neighboring states of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, and Virginia. Georgia legalized PPAs in 2015. Since then, the state has installed solar energy that is three times the national average.

Legalizing PPAs will fuel demand for renewable energy in West Virginia, but that’s not enough. We need to make sure West Virginians and West Virginia corporations install these facilities.

The federal government plays a role here.

A “green job” is not just the wiring of solar panels on a roof by the installer. It’s also the seller who closes the deal, the truck driver who supplies the equipment, and the researcher who works in a lab to develop new technologies.

The federal government should invest in staff development programs to train West Virgins for these roles. This appropriation should support, inter alia, vocational training (including on-the-job training), mid-career development and the creation of new small businesses and workers’ cooperatives.

If you invest in renewable energies now, jobs in energy production will be preserved in our country. Federal support can ensure West Virginia does not lag behind in the transition to a renewable energy economy.

An example of an existing federal program that could be expanded is the USDA Rural Energy Program for America (REAP). This program provides grants and loan guarantees to rural business owners and farmers. Last year REAP provided over $ 1 million in loans and grants to farms and businesses in West Virginia. However, more can be done to provide West Virginia businesses and farms with access to affordable, locally produced renewable energy. An expanded REAP program could provide REAP applicants with additional technical assistance so that they can prepare applications and install their projects.

Generations ago, the federal government invested in nationwide electrification. This expansion of infrastructure provided a critical market for West Virginia coal. This made our state an energy power plant. Today, a new round of investment is required to maintain West Virginia’s energy leadership for generations.

Environment America launches 100% renewable campaigns in 13 states

Environment America launched its 2021 campaigns for 100% renewable energy in 13 states on Feb. 8. The announcement comes as the Biden Administration, which campaigned on achieving carbon pollution-free power nationwide by 2035, continues to push for a federal 100% clean electricity target.

The multi-state effort features campaigns in California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas and Wisconsin.

“States are America’s trailblazers when it comes to clean energy,” said Johanna Neumann, senior director of Environment America’s Campaign for 100% Renewable Energy. “State leaders who have the courage and ambition to repower their state with renewable energy are carving out the path that everyone else will soon walk with familiarity. The most effective of those trailblazers act with clarity and urgency to realize the potential of renewable energy that abounds in every corner of our great land.”

Since 2018, when Environment America and its state groups launched its 100% Renewable Campaign, the organization has played a key role in convincing California, New Mexico, Maine, Washington and Virginia to make commitments to 100% clean or renewable electricity. Now, with seven states having enacted laws requiring 100% clean electricity, the group will push other states to join in committing to play a pivotal role in moving toward a completely renewable energy society. The group advocates for commitments that also include meaningful interim targets to ensure near-term renewable energy growth.

Florida
Environment Florida helped introduce State Renewable Energy Goals (HB283) and a companion renewable energy bill (SB720), which set a target for the state to get its electricity from renewable energy by 2040 and reduce the state’s carbon emissions to net-zero by 2050. The group is also encouraging local governments, colleges and universities and other major energy users to commit to transitioning to 100% renewable energy.

Georgia
Environment Georgia is driving the adoption and implementation of 100% clean and renewable energy commitments in many of Georgia’s largest cities and is also helping to move legislation supporting a statewide transition to 100% renewable energy by 2050 (HR 70).

Illinois
Environment Illinois is working with environmental advocates and leaders in the renewables industry to pass clean energy legislation that includes the strongest policies to commit Illinois to 100% clean and renewable energy.

Massachusetts
This session, Environment Massachusetts is supporting legislation that will be filed by Rep. Marjorie Decker. The bill puts Massachusetts on track to achieve 100% clean electricity by 2035 and 100% clean energy for heating and transportation by 2045. Last session, a similar bill was endorsed by a majority of state legislators.

Minnesota
Environment Minnesota is advocating for Rep. Jamie Long’s 100% Clean Energy Bill, which requires 100% carbon free electricity by 2040, including 55% renewable energy by 2035. The organization will continue supporting even more aggressive timelines and public investments in clean transportation and energy efficiency needed to get Minnesota off fossil fuels as quickly as possible.

New Jersey
Environment New Jersey supports the reintroduction of the 2018 Senate Bill 1405, championed by Sens. Patrick Diegnan and Loretta Weinberg, which would commit New Jersey to reaching 100% clean, renewable electricity statewide by 2035. The bill comes as part of an effort to implement the state Global Warming Response Act (GWRA), which requires a 80% reduction in carbon emissions by 2050.

North Carolina
Environment North Carolina is supporting legislation that calls for 100% renewable energy by 2050.

Environment Oregon is advocating for a statewide legislative commitment to 100% clean and renewable electricity.
