I went to an overseas university to learn how to raise my hand! ✋🏼✋🏼✋🏼~~~~~~In Singapore back in the 90s when I was a student, listening and learning is always a priority. You only speak up when you have the right answer or have brilliant questions or risk being scolded by your teachers. As such, I never bothered to raise my hand pretty much my whole school life because I didn’t have anything brilliant to ask and someone else would already have given the answer. The first few years of my work life didn’t need me to raise my hands as well, as I was working in the laboratory which just require agile hands for experiments. Thereafter, I was in a local work environment where the bosses would rather you not speak out and do just what you were told. It’s only when I started working in an MNC environment with many colleagues of different cultures that I realised my shortcomings: I often get feedbacks that I was too quiet. And you also realised the profile of people who got promoted are usually the ones whom speaks up the most, not necessarily the one with the skills and ability.Realising my shortcomings, I needed a brand new environment to reconfigure myself for a brand new me. Hence, even though I could have applied for the top universities in Singapore and even have a alumni discount, I looked overseas instead. The overseas experience was kinda a culture shock though expected. The professors there don't get annoyed when someone gives the wrong answer but encourages discussions. Although the discussions have spun to another world and derailed the lesson plan, it doesn’t matter! After months of being in a safe environment…. I finally adapted to the free spoken culture that ✋🏼It is ok not to have the right answer ✋🏼Nobody judges you✋🏼Speaking up is always a plus!So do I raise my hands frequently now? Yes and no… unfortunately for me but fortunately for others, it still depends if I have done my homework and understanding before I make a comment (so that I don’t waste people’s time). But the rate of ✋🏼✋🏼 and speaking up have definitely improved and if I have something to say I certainly won’t be shy and hold back anymore.Do you find disadvantaged growing up in a culture that didn’t quite encourage us to be more vocal to speak up?#continuousimprovements#lifelonglearning~~~~~~P.S This post is inspired and encouraged by Juliana Chan, PhD the LinkedIn coach who was as quiet as me!

Yesterday, I joined the "Your Goals of 2024" workshop led by Migle Gudaviciute-Kapoor. I must admit, I'm unusually late with my New Year's resolutions this year – maybe because the year itself was anything but ordinary? 🌓As I scroll through LinkedIn, I notice an array(👩🏼💻) of New Year's resolutions. Conversely, some are advocating for a resolution-free year, just going with the flow. 🏄Personally, I find joy in setting goals and reflecting on their completion by year-end. It's fascinating to observe which goals stand the test of time and which lose relevance. In my opinion, choosing between setting specific goals or embracing the spontaneous flow is subjective. What matters is what works best for you. In Rob Dial's book "Level Up" and his podcast series ("The Mindset Mentor," my favorite - highly recommend both!), he emphasises the significance of having an accountability partner to ensure you stay committed and don't let your goals fade away by February's end. 💥If you want to have an accountability partner, Migle can help you with this, because she launched her mentorship program which focus on achieving goals. Contact her! 📞Deciding to be accountable to oneself is challenging. That's why I've taken the route of scheduling a monthly reminder and have and accountability friend – a nudge to check in on my goals and celebrate the victories, no matter how small. Here's to a year of growth, learning, and unexpected triumphs! 🚀✨#goals #career #levelup #selfdevelopment #resolutions #achievements

#Vanity vs #ImpactWhy does one write here?Who are you writing for?I was listening to Tim Ferriss’ podcast with Cal Newport, where they discussed how content creators may be pursuing the Sisyphean task of figuring out social media algorithms to maximise reach, but to what benefit - hence earlier 2 questions. ******What I write about = what I care to share. To an audience made up largely of people I’ve met professionally, went to school with, and shared sports interests. ******I post mostly in one of 5 modes: G.R.A.B.S. 𝐆ratitude mode: I write about someone - what I admire about them or am thankful for in them. 𝐑eflection mode: I write about what I’m thinking deeply about - may need help to attain clarity - sometimes, audience helps. 𝐀chievement mode: I celebrate success - almost always what was done together with others. 𝐁etterment mode: I write about what I did less successfully and what the mistakes taught me. 𝐒ocial mode: “hey, look, I think this is fun and maybe we can do this together - join me!”I hope my posts G.R.A.B.S. your attention. For the right reasons. And hopefully you benefited. Tell me what you’d like to read more about, what you’re curious about or simply what thoughts have been triggered. #BeGood, Be Very Good,GRiT Academy

❓ The WHY Question – How I Found My "Why" and How It WorksI was recently asked a thought-provoking question during a podcast: "How did you find your 'Why', and how does it work for you?" It's such a fundamental concept that I wanted to share my thoughts here.Understanding my "Why" is crucial for revealing the core reasons behind my actions and decisions. Simon Sinek's book "Start with Why" and his TED Talk explain this brilliantly, using examples like Apple's success and the Wright Brothers' achievements to show how a strong "Why" drives extraordinary outcomes.🔎 My Personal "Why"For me, it's about understanding what truly motivates me. My "Why" is to support individuals in achieving their potential and dreams. As a mentor with The Prince's Trust, my "Why" is to empower young people to realise their potential and achieve their dreams. This "Why" keeps me motivated, even when faced with challenges. For instance, I often hit brick walls when trying to find information and resources to support my young, high-functioning autistic mentee. They are highly capable but don't fit societal norms. Despite these obstacles, my "Why" drives me to persevere and find ways to support them.💬 Using "Why" in CommunicationStarting with "Why" in my communications and social media posts inspires others and leads to greater engagement. It creates authenticity and trust, aligning actions with core purposes.Techniques to Discover and Use Your "Why"💡 Reflect on Experiences- Think back to moments of profound satisfaction to uncover your core motivations.💡 Ask "Why" Continuously- Dig deeper into your motivations by repeatedly asking, "Why is this important to me? Why do I feel passionate about this?"💡 Share Your "Why"- Discuss your "Why" with family and friends. Their perspective can help you refine your purpose.💡 Align Career with "Why"- Choose a career path that aligns with your core beliefs for meaningful work.Understanding your "Why" drives your motivation and helps inspire and engage others. Continually reflecting on and aligning with your "Why" can lead to a more fulfilling and impactful life. ❓ What's your why?#FindYourWhy #PurposeDriven #PersonalGrowth

Do you like to “Be-Good” or “Get-Better”? Ok so it might be cliché but yes, I’ve been thinking about goals at the start of year.I’ve been re-reading my copy of 𝙎𝙪𝙘𝙘𝙚𝙚𝙙: 𝙃𝙤𝙬 𝙒𝙚 𝘾𝙖𝙣 𝙍𝙚𝙖𝙘𝙝 𝙊𝙪𝙧 𝙂𝙤𝙖𝙡𝙨 by Heidi Grant Halvorson over the summer break.I was reminded that how we view goal setting can say a lot about us, and often determines whether or not we eventually succeed.Research shows that when we focus on getting better, we cope more effectively when things get hard. When you're faced with complexity, time, pressure, obstacles or unexpected challenges – you don’t get so discouraged. You’re more likely to believe you can still do well if you just keep trying. This is in essence another way of referring to a growth mindset (as coined by Carol Dweck). We can pay attention to getting better in terms of things we do but also concerning who we are. Sophie Llewellyn Smith refers to this concept in her recent podcast episode on 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘦 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘳 - 𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘦𝘵 𝘨𝘰𝘢𝘭𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘬 𝘪𝘯 2024 (link in comments). So, in addition to setting get-better goals this year around time-blocking, connecting with family and being present, I am also going to add a “to be” list to my nightly “to do list”. Our intentions of how we want to “be” may just end up positively impacting what we want to "do". For example, if I intend to be more present with my family, then I will put down my phone and play with my kids. If I intend to be more cheerful then I will smile while on phone calls and seek to connect. I'd love to hear your “get-better” goals and what's on your “to be” list? Do you want to be more cheerful, patient, confident, brave, intuitive or friendly?#goalsetting #getbetter #intention

I hate you...for not doing one thing today that will make you a better person. Here are things you can do:1️⃣ Learn Something New: Dive into a podcast, read an article, or even watch a TED talk. Your brain will thank you, and who knows, you might just become the next trivia champion at the office! 🧠 #LifelongLearning2️⃣ Help Someone Out: Hold the door for a stranger, offer to help a colleague, or even just smile at someone. It's the little things that make a big difference. Plus, karma points! 😉 #RandomActsOfKindness3️⃣ Practice Gratitude: Write down three things you're grateful for. It could be as simple as "coffee" or as deep as "endless opportunities." Gratitude turns what we have into enough. 🙏 #AttitudeOfGratitude4️⃣ Set a Goal: Big or small, setting a goal gives you something to aim for. Want to run a marathon? Start with a jog around the block. Dreaming of a promotion? Learn a new skill. Aim high, start small! 🎯 #GoalSetting5️⃣ Reflect on Your Day: Spend a few minutes before bed thinking about what went well and what could have been better. Self-reflection is the key to self-improvement – and to not repeating the same mistakes (like accidentally sending a '😂' emoji on a work email). 🤦♂️🤷♀️ #SelfImprovementI don't really hate you (there are only 2 people in the world that I don't like and they are not seeing this post). So sorry for the click bait but at least I got you to think about doing something that could make you and someone around you feel good!Remember, becoming a better person is a journey, not a destination. Let's make today count! 🚀
